- “So, gentlemen, let's discuss the prospect of ending the war tonight.”
- ―Hans Landa
World War II (WWII or WW2), also known as the Second World War, was a global war that lasted from 1939 to 1945. It involved the vast majority of the world's nations - including all of the great powers - eventually forming two opposing military alliances: the Allies (United States, United Kingdom and Commonwealth, Soviet Union) and the Axis (Third Reich, Italy and Japan).
In Inglourious Basterds
The events of WWII have a different outcome in the film. Hans Landa's presence in France and Fredrick Zoller rise to be the star of the Third Reich causes Shosanna Dreyfus to seek vengeance for her family being killed by the Nazis. Lt. Aldo Raine, who appears to have survived a lynching sometime in the 30s, assembles a team of 8 Jewish-American soldiers with the mission to strike fear in the German troops stationed in France. Hugo Stiglitz, a German Wehrmacht sergeant about to be sentenced to death by the Nazis is release by The Basterds and will continue to wreck havoc in Nazi occupied France. It's implied that the war most likely ends in June 1944, one year earlier than the fell of the real life Nazi Regime.
The consequences of this event for the future remains unknown.
