Donny beats Werner to death as all the Basterds watch

Donny beating Werner to death in the Woods.

The Woods was the location in Territoire de Belfort, France, where The Basterds, led by Lt. Aldo Raine, ambushed a German patrol. The only survivors of the German patrol were Sgt. Werner Rachtman, Private Butz and Ludwig.

Chapter Two - INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS[]

We see the Basterds looting dead German soldiers. Sgt. Werner Rachtman, Private Butz and Ludwig are the only German survivors left after an attack of the Basterds. Donny kills Werner by beating him with his baseball bat, and Hirschberg shoots Ludwig in the back. After Butz reveals the location of another German unit, Aldo Raine carves a swastika on the German soldier's forehead with his knife.

Trivia[]

  • Although the region where the Basterds are located is not mentioned in the film, the map Aldo carries has "Belfort" written on it. Territoire de Belfort is a region in eastern France, near the border with Germany and Switzerland, while Belfort is its largest city and administrative center. The Basterds presence there makes sense, as the Basterds just recently broke Stiglitz out of jail, which was in Germany, so they couldn't have been far away from the border.
  • While the map says "Belfort", the image on the map shows forested regions with roads, and since Belfort is a city, the map must actually be to its French department, Territoire de Belfort.
  • Aldo's map is sold on Yourprops.
  • In the original script, no name is given to the area where The Basterds ambushed Rachtman's company, instead the only name given is "French woods".

Behind the scenes[]

The scene was shot in Fort Hahneberg, which is actually in Germany[1].
