The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (original title: Il buono, il brutto, il cattivo) is a 1966 Italian epic Spaghetti Western film directed by Sergio Leone and starring Clint Eastwood, Lee Van Cleef, and Eli Wallach in their respective title roles.

Plot[]

A bounty hunting scam joins two men in an uneasy alliance against a third in a race to find a fortune in gold buried in a remote cemetery.

Relation with Inglourious Basterds[]

  • The beginning of the film is similar to that of Chapter One: both Landa and Angel Eyes ("the Bad") are seen arriving from a distance in similarly composed shots
  • A farm is the first building seen and the close-up of a sweaty tanned man face is shown
  • The farmer's kid announces the father that a suspicious man (Angel Eyes/Hans Landa) has arrived, with the said man joins the table with the farmer
  • Both men are looking for someone who's hiding under a different name
  • Both men claim to be good at finding people, and are in it for personal gain/money
  • The heart in both sequences is also echoed in that both are tense interrogation sequences: Landa talking to LaPadite and Angel Eyes with the Mexican farmer
  • A person escapes a shooting by bursting through an opening (Tuco through window, Shosanna through a grate) and run away, while one of the gunmen point a gun at said person, but the runaway escapes alive
  • A man laying in bed is killed through a pillow
  • Both stories take place during an important war (American Civil War and World War II)

Trivia[]

  • Aldo Raine's hanging scar is a reference to the character Tuco, one of the three protagonists of the film, who managed to avoid death by hanging on several occasions.
