Inglourious Basterds Aldo & Donny

The Basterds with Aldo.

The English military base was a garrison located somewhere in the UK, where Lt. Aldo Raine assembled a special unit of 8 Jewish-American soldiers, nicknamed The Basterds and briefed them about their mission in France to kill Nazis before the Allies forces land in Europe.

Overview[]

The military base appears to have a large building and a large yard, with pavement made of cubical stones. A few other smaller buildings are seen in the background. The location does not appear to be in any major city.

History[]

Chapter Two - INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS[]

Lt. Aldo Raine, under the command of the OSS, arrived at this British base, after recently fighting in Sicily, and assembled a team of 8 Jewish-American soldiers with the sole purpose of striking fear in the German forces behind enemy lines in France, before the Allied invasion, aka D-Day.

Trivia[]

  • The scene with the Basterds in the garrison yard is a homage to The Dirty Dozen opening scene.
  • The location of the garrison yard where Aldo briefs the Basterds is not mentioned in the film. The original script gives their location to be "somewhere in England", with no further description.
  • The Basterds are seen carrying M1 Garand rifles in their introduction scene, but don't use them during the film, instead they use many Karabiner 98k rifles that they looted from the dead German soldiers, which is necessary, as the ammunition is not compatible between the two rifles.
    • B. J. Novak discussed in an interview how he and the rest of the cast received training in handling German weapons from a company in Berlin that specialized in technical presentation of German military hardware. The backstory was that the Basterds seized the guns and other armaments from every Nazi they killed and would be able to handle them flawlessly.
