The Allied invasion of Sicily, codenamed Operation Husky, was a major World War II campaign, in which the Allies took Sicily from the Axis (Italy and Nazi Germany).

In Inglourious Basterds

While in UK, lt. Aldo Raine tells The Basterds that he took part of the invasion in Sicily, before being assigned to the Basterds unit.

Trivia

• When Lt. Aldo Raine introduces himself, he claims he took part in the invasion of Sicily. However, the map shown behind Adolf Hitler shows an incorrect representation of Axis forces/control for the time (showing North Africa and Sicily as still under Axis control).
• Also, in real life, the invasion of Sicily took place in July 1943 and ended in August the same year, 10-11 months prior to the events from the last four chapters.
